At the turn of the 20th century Arco was a thriving health and holiday resort in the Austro-Hungarian Empire (“Kurort”), popular with the Habsburg nobility and high society. After the Great War, the abandoned villas and grand hotels were converted into sanatoriums for the care of tuberculosis which was rampant at the time.

This itinerary is based on what is left of these buildings, accompanied by the writings of numerous Italian and foreign authors who were guests in these health centres. These included the writer Vasco Pratolini (a patient here in 1933-35), the journalist and writer Goffredo Parise, writer Gesualdo Bufalino and the Hungarian writer and journalist Sandor Marai. User

Safety information

The Hidden Treasures itineraries were designed in order to give visitors a chance to get to know places in Garda Trentino that are off the beaten track. For this reason, the signposting is not always in the same style and sometimes missing altogether. We therefore recommend you to take a good map with you on these excursions. And then bear in mind your general reference points: Lake Garda = South, Monte Stivo = East, Rocchetta = West, Arco Castle = North.

The telephone number for the emergency services is 112.

The information on this chart is subject to inevitable variations, so this means that none of the indications are absolute. It is not entirely possible to avoid giving inexact or imprecise information, given how quickly environmental and weather conditions can change. For this reason we decline any responsibility for changes which the user may encounter. In any case,  the hiker is advised to check the conditions of the places, environment and weather before setting out.

This excursion is quite simple and presents no particular difficulty. However, we still recommend you to wear suitable footwear, a hat, sun screen and sunglasses. And be sure to bring water!

Leave from  the hospital of San Pancrazio in via S. Caterina (note the Habsburg era balconies on the facade). Head towards the right, turning then into via Powell as far as the bus station and then continuing on down via Roma as far as the evangelical church. Head on straight between the Casino and the Cassa Rurale, then turn left when you come to viale delle Magnolie. Now go in the direction of Largo Arciduca Alberto and on your right you will see what was once the Sanatorio delle Palme, now a public building, and on the opposite corner of the intersection with via Capitelli, what used to be the “Quisisana” ecclesiastical sanatorium. Continue on down via Capitelli, pass the civil hospital and its historic gatehouse until you come to the Casa di Cura Eremo. First head down via 21 Aprile, then turn into via S. Marcello, which takes you to via Carducci which you continue down until you come to the next crossroads. Turn right and continue for several hundred metres until you come to the entrance gate to Villa Angerer (once “Sanaclero”) where the itinerary comes to an end.

Return trip: Go back as far as the Casa di Cura Eremo, from where you can take the bus in front of the church of San Marcello, or continue on down via dei Capitelli going back the way you came. When you come to Largo Arciduca go on straight southwards until you come to via Santa Caterina.
