Lake Tenno is one of the most uncontaminated alpine lakes in Italy and you can swim in it in summertime. The lake is famous for its characteristic hue, a rich turquoise colour which changes with the seasons. Another characteristic feature is the way in which the water level varies: in autumn it can be 15 metres higher than in summer.

A short distance from the lake, the medieval village of Canale is counted among the “Most Beautiful Villages in Italy”. It is a concentrated mixture of history, art and tradition, preserved virtually intact to the present day.  Its solid stone houses, vaulted archways, underpasses, narrow laneways and wooden balconies are the perfect illustration of the rural architecture of the area. Here you will find the "Casa degli Artisti": opened in the 1960s, it offers hospitality to artists in search of inspiration, who in return, donated one of their works. Today, the Casa hosts exhibitions, workshop and all manner of activities open to the public.

Safety information

The Hidden Treasures itineraries were designed in order to give visitors a chance to get to know places in Garda Trentino that are off the beaten track. For this reason, the signposting is not always in the same style and sometimes missing altogether. We therefore recommend you to take a good map with you on these excursions. And then bear in mind your general reference points: Lake Garda = South, Monte Stivo = East, Rocchetta = West, Arco Castle = North.

The telephone number for the emergency services is 112.

The information on this chart is subject to inevitable variations, so this means that none of the indications are absolute. It is not entirely possible to avoid giving inexact or imprecise information, given how quickly environmental and weather conditions can change. For this reason we decline any responsibility for changes which the user may encounter. In any case,  the hiker is advised to check the conditions of the places, environment and weather before setting out.

This excursion is quite simple and presents no particular difficulty. However, we still recommend you to wear suitable footwear, a hat, sun screen and sunglasses. And be sure to bring water!

Tips, hints and links

  • Note: Dogs are not allowed on the pedestrian path around Lake Tenno from 1st June to 30th September.
  • There are two events organised in Canale every year which are a must for anyone in the area. In mid-August, there is the “Rustico Medioevo” festival: one of the top medieval-themed events in Trentino, for an entire week, the streets of the village are filled with performances, local food and wine, and medieval music. In winter, Canale hosts the traditional Christmas Market. Here the stalls are set up in the old stables and cellars of the traditional stone houses and sell only typical Trento produce and handicrafts. For further information:

Turn-by-turn directions

Leave from the car park beside Lake Tenno. Follow directions to the lake which is at the end of a long flight of steps. Then continue to the right along a path which follows the lake shore. Now head uphill to the refreshments area (bar open in summer) and from there follow directions for Canale which you will reach in about half an hour.

From the village continue on in the direction of Calvola. Just outside the village, a short detour to the right will lead you to the monument to the “Strambevie” which shows four villagers engaged in a heated neighbourhood meeting. This monument celebrates the Vicinia, an institution which dates back to medieval times and is still part of the life of Ville del Monte. Return to the junction and take a trail which in about half a kilometre leads to Calvola, a small hamlet in a panoramic position. Head down the narrow lane in front of the church and you will come to the main road which leads you back to Canale and the trail you came out on. Here you can retrace your steps to Lake Tenno. This time, however, keep on straight on the forestry trail which takes you to the eastern shore of the lake. Then continue along the path to complete the loop around the lake until you get back to where you started from.

Very nice easy hike! My recommendation: Enjoy a break at the village bar and enjoy their “purple” ( a lavender based cocktail) Take some swimsuit so you can bath at the lake on the way back
