The Sarca (which is a feminine name in Italian) is one of the major rivers in Trentino: fed by springs in the Adamello, it passes through south-western Trentino for 80 km before flowing into Lake Garda. Its course is now protected by the Sarca River Park, with the intention of conserving and making the most of an environment with particular characteristics. Along the cycle path on the east bank there are a number of information panels with details about the river and its particular natural environments.

This itinerary runs along both sides of the River Sarca. The river is the focus of the trail, and accompanies you all the way. Throughout history, in fact, the River Sarca has been settled, crossed, exploited in a number of different ways: this trail wants to give homage to the river and its central importance. And let's not forget that the River Sarca is above all an oasis of tranquillity and relaxation in natural surroundings for those who stroll along its banks.

Author’s recommendation

In summer, under the Roman bridge of Ceniga, be sure to enjoy the little beach on the river shore: it is the perfect place for a refreshing stop-off!

Safety information

The Hidden Treasures itineraries were designed in order to give visitors a chance to get to know places in Garda Trentino that are off the beaten track. For this reason, the signposting is not always in the same style and sometimes missing altogether. We therefore recommend you to take a good map with you on these excursions. And then bear in mind your general reference points: Lake Garda = South, Monte Stivo = East, Rocchetta = West, Arco Castle = North.

The telephone number for the emergency services is 112.

The information on this chart is subject to inevitable variations, so this means that none of the indications are absolute. It is not entirely possible to avoid giving inexact or imprecise information, given how quickly environmental and weather conditions can change. For this reason we decline any responsibility for changes which the user may encounter. In any case,  the hiker is advised to check the conditions of the places, environment and weather before setting out.

Equipment

This excursion is quite simple and presents no particular difficulty. However, we still recommend you to wear suitable footwear, a hat, sun screen and sunglasses. And be sure to bring water!

Turn-by-turn directions

From the car park in Ceniga cross the road and head down as far as the Roman Bridge. On the other side of the bridge, turn left and continue on towards Arco. After a few hundred metres, you come to a path on the right which leads to the hermitage Eremo di San Paolo, in a panoramic position beneath the rock.  Continue on towards Arco and pass the water intake at Malapreda, the calchéra di Prabi (lime kiln dating back to 1961) and the old hydroelectric power station of Prabi, half hidden among the vegetation between the road and the river near the restaurant. Along the trail you can also see the water intake works for the power station.

Continue on until you come to the intersection with via Legionari Cecoslovacchi, where you can just make out the chapel of Sant'Apollinare on your right. When you get to Arco bridge, take the cycle path which takes you back to Ceniga along the river bank (about 5 Km).

You can also follow this itinerary starting from Arco: just follow the cycle path along the river that leads to Ceniga and from there follow the directions given above.
