Turn-by-turn directions

You’ll find the entrance of this archaeological site along the right-hand side of Strada Statale 421 dei Laghi di Molveno e Tenno, between Fiavè and Passo Ballino, about 200 metres from the restaurant “La Pineta”. Leave your car at the carpark on site and start climbing Dòss dei Gustinacci, a hill rising on the south-eastern corner of the marshland. Here, you will encounter the ruins of some prehistoric stone houses, built around 1300 A.C after the stilt houses fell permanently in disuse. Descend the other side of the hill and join the dirt track that runs along the Torrente Carera winding its way through grasslands and crop fields. After 150 metres, turn left onto the wooden walkway leading to the pile-dwelling site. Excavations, conducted between 1969 and 1976, yielded evidence of human presence in prehistoric time with settlements dating back to 2100-1300 B.C., further supported by the original piles still immersed in water. Continue the site visit around the small pool of water to re-join the dirt track which you’ll leave shortly after to turn left onto a long walkway leading to the heart of the wetland abundant in canes, with the typical “Mazzasorda” (Typha latifolia), patches of shrubs with “Salice Cenerino” and floating carpets of water lilies (Nynphaea Alba).  At the end of the walkway, turn left onto a dirt track that runs along the natural reserve’s boundaries; on the border with the surrounding fields you will find, in an elevated position, a wooden tower from which you can enjoy a birds-eye view of the area watching the wildlife living on the wetland. At the end of the dirt track, continue on another wooden walkway, across a swamp, joining another road bordering the forest, sheltered by a thicket of shrubs.  Carry on to the left through the trees, passing grassland and crop fields until you reach the starting point. For those wishing to learn more about this archaeological site, we recommend a visit to Museo delle Palafitte di Fiavé (info +39 0465 735019).
