A nature walk which in just a few kilometres manages to give a fascinating insight into the historical events which left their mark on Garda Trentino

This trail tells the story of different episodes in Twentieth century history, winding through beautiful natural surroundings, the most northerly holly oak woodlands in Europe and many other species of vegetation. It leads you from the oolite quarries and the ruined houses of the miners who quarried the stone up to the trenches from the Great War.

Author’s recommendation

Today the oolite quarries are climbing walls where you can see top athletes challenging their skills on very demanding routes. If you can spare the time, stop off for a while and watch their slow progress on the rock. User

Safety information

The information on this chart is subject to inevitable variations, so this means that none of the indications are absolute. It is not entirely possible to avoid giving inexact or imprecise information, given how quickly environmental and weather conditions can change. For this reason we decline any responsibility for changes which the user may encounter. In any case,  the hiker is advised to check the conditions of the places, environment and weather before setting out.

You need to be wearing the right clothing and take the proper gear when you go hiking in the mountains. Even on relatively short easy outings make sure to take all you need so you don't run into trouble if things take an unexpected turn, for example a storm blows up or you have a sudden drop in energy levels.

What should you take when you go on a hike?

What you should have in your rucksack (for a day trip a 25/30L capacity should do):

  • water canteen (1L)
  • snacks (e.g. mixed dried fruit or chocolate)
  • First aid kit
  • windproof jacket
  • fleece
  • change of t-shirt and socks (in a plastic bag)
  • make sure to wear or at least bring a pair of long trousers
  • hat
  • sun screen
  • sunglasses
  • gloves
  • whistle to attract attention in an emergency
  • emergency telephone number: 112

Make sure you're wearing the right footwear for the trail and season. The going can get rough and rocky underfoot and a pair of hiking boots will protect you from sprains. When wet, a grassy slope, rocky slab or steep trail can be dangerous unless you are wearing the proper footwear.

And finally...
... don't forget to bring your camera! You'll need it to capture the stunning views you come across all over Garda Trentino. And if you like, you can share your memories with us at #GardaTrentino.

Tips, hints and links

  • Bosco Caproni gets its name from the family of Gianni Caproni, the famous aviation pioneer born in this area in 1886. Today this area is part of the River Sarca Reserve.

Turn-by-turn directions

Follow the cycle path north from Arco Bridge. After the boardwalk along the River Sarca cross the main road (via the underpass) and you soon come to San Martino: from here continue to the chapel of the same name and on to the tarmac road for Troiana. Follow the road as far as a car park on a bend at the base of the “Policromuro” sports climbing crag. Now take the mule track into the valley and keep to the left until you come to the oolite quarry.
The trail runs between the rocky walls left by the quarrying work and comes to Case Caproni. Follow the trail along the defence lines of the trenches of Vastrè and when you rejoin the trail, instead of heading uphill towards Case Caproni, go down to the right until you come to the tarmac road near the family-friendly climbing area in San Martino. From here you head back to Arco the way you came.
