This is a quite challenging route but it is varied and great fun. You leave from the Garda Trentino Tourist Information Office in Riva del Garda. With the tourist office at your back, take the cycle path as far as Museo della Rocca, then head along the lake shore as far as Piazza III Novembre. From the piazza, follow the little harbour until you come to the main road and then head south. Before the tunnel, turn right and start to climb. This is the only real uphill stretch on all the “Ponale” area and it is quite short. Now head downhill and immediately turn left at the start of the Ponale road. Head uphill for about 2.5 kilometres on a mainly dirt road which passes through some tunnels. Along this stretch you have some breathtaking views of Lake Garda so a stop-off is highly recommended. Continue, leaving the Bar Ponale Alto Belvedere on your left. Now you ride on tarmac as far as the junction where you turn right towards Valle di Ledro. The road rises, cutting across the mountainside. At the end of the road you come to the main road and, after just a few metres, take the first road on the left, following directions for Pregasina. After the bridge, take the dirt cycle path on the right. The road alternates gentle uphill stretches and sections which are practically flat until you come to Prè di Ledro. Cycle through the hamlet and continue on tarmac for a while before it changes to dirt road once more. Once you have passed a steep stretch surfaced in cement, you come to the hamlet of Molina di Ledro. Continue along the cycle path and, when you reach the main road, follow signposts for the Museo delle Palafitte di Ledro. Here you follow the lake shore, passing through Pur, the beginning of a short uphill stretch at the end of which you turn right. This is the start of a fun downhill stretch of dirt road which soon levels off. The track ends in front of a sailing club. Here you turn right and cycle past some camp sites in via Alzer and follow the main road. Go straight on at the roundabout, crossing the road and entering the town of Pieve di Ledro. Cycle through the town and turn left into Via Sant'Antonio and take the old road. At the end of this section which is for pedestrians and bicycles only, turn right onto the road which takes you into the lovely Valle di Concei valley. The road climbs gently uphill, with no particular difficulties, on tarmac. Before you come to Lenzumo, turn right and follow directions for the Rifugio Nino Pernici hut. The road rises steadily through woods on tarmac. Leaving the woods behind you, you now find yourself on a dirt road. You come to Malga Trat and, after a short downhill stretch, head uphill again, still on a dirt road, to “Bocca Trat”: turn right and, in the distance, you can already see the mountain hut Rifugio Nino Pernici, which is your final destination.
The return journey
Head down from Rifugio Nino Pernici to “Bocca Trat”, then turn right and head downhill. The dirt road has some very steep downhill stretches, other sections are very uneven, so it is recommended you take it slow. If needs be, you can always get off and push your bike.
Once you are out of the woods, you will find yourself on meadows near Malga Grassi. Keep to the dirt road which has a compact surface which makes for fast going. Now you come to an tarmac road. On a straight stretch, on your left, you will see the San Martino excavations which are well worth a visit. Once you come to Campi, follow directions for Pinza. Now you are on a mixed surface, part dirt road, part cement. Take it easy, seeing how steep some sections are, and you will quickly come to Riva del Garda. At the bottom of the hill you are in Via Ardaro. At the stop sign continue downhill to the left until you come to the roundabout with the Church of Santa Maria Inviolata. Stay on the right and follow directions for the post office of Riva del Garda. At the post office roundabout turn right again into Via Filzi and shortly afterwards you are back at the point from where you started.
