Ponale links Riva del Garda to Pregasina and to Valle di Ledro, and it is one of the most beautiful attractions of Garda Trentino.

The road is along the mountain side overlooking Lake Garda and offers great views. From Ponale Alto you continue on the left to Pregasina, but you can decide to go to the right toward Lake Ledro.

Turn-by-turn directions

The itinerary starts at the Ingarda tourist office; with the building at your back, take the cycle path as far as Rocca, then follow the lake as far as Piazza III Novembre. At the end of the town centre, from Piazza Catena, take the main road and head south in the direction of Limone sul Garda. Before the tunnel, turn right and begin to climb. This short stretch is the only uphill section of the entire Ponale route. Come back down again and immediately turn left. This is where the Ponale trail really begins. Head uphill always on a dirt road apart from the tunnels where there is still the original asphalt surface. While you are climbing you have an exceptional view over Lake Garda and it is well worth a stop off to admire it better. Keep going until at the end of the dirt road you come to Bar Ponale Alto (Belvedere) which, as its name suggests, offers a spectacular view of the lake. Cycle on a short distance and you come to a junction where you go left to Pregasina untile the Regina Mundi (you can choose to head uphill to the right to Valle di Ledro). You can head back the way you came.

Equipment

Riding your bike requires specific clothing and equipment, even for relatively short and easy trips. It is always better to be prepared… e.g. for bad weather or a drop your energy levels. The unexpected things also make up a part of the fun!

Remember to throughly evaluate the type of route you plan to do, the locations you plan to cross and the current season. Has it been raining? Attention: The paths may be slippery and require more caution.

What do I need to bring on my bike tour?

  • An adequate water supply according to your needs (considering temperature, possibility of refuelling and duration of the route)
  • Plenty of snacks (for example, dried fruit or energy bars)
  • Waterproof / Windproof jacket.
  • A spare top / spare socks. (Descending in a sweaty garment, will make you cold)
  • Suncream
  • Sunglasses
  • Bike gloves/mitts
  • Map or GPS device
  • Bike lights: best placed on your helmet or handlebars. (It is always best to be prepared)
  • Bike repair kit for punctures and mechanical breakdowns
  • First aid kit
  • Emergency whistle

It is always advised to let someone know where you plan to go and how long you expect to be.
