Equipment

Riding your bike requires specific clothing and equipment, even for relatively short and easy trips. It is always better to be prepared… e.g. for bad weather or a drop your energy levels. The unexpected things also make up a part of the fun!

Remember to throughly evaluate the type of route you plan to do, the locations you plan to cross and the current season. Has it been raining? Attention: The paths may be slippery and require more caution.

What do I need to bring on my bike tour?

  • An adequate water supply according to your needs (considering temperature, possibility of refuelling and duration of the route)
  • Plenty of snacks (for example, dried fruit or energy bars)
  • Waterproof / Windproof jacket.

  • Bike lights: best placed on your helmet or handlebars. (It is always best to be prepared)
  • Bike repair kit for punctures and mechanical breakdowns

Turn-by-turn directions

The departure point is the Garda Trentino tourist office situated near the post office in Riva del Garda. Take the first right turn into viale Rovereto. Cycle for about 600 metres until you see the Hotel Luise on your left. Pass the hotel and cross the road at the pedestrian crossing and head north along the cycle track which is right in front of you. The cycle path is flat and presents no difficulties whatsoever. Continue along the cycle path without turning off for about 2.5 kilometres. When you come to the traffic light cross the street and continue until the next stop sign where you turn right into via Fornasetta. At the end of the road you come to another traffic light. Go straight on, staying on the main road which takes you to Ceole. Head down via Dante Alighieri until you come to the convent Convento delle Grazie. At the stop sign turn left onto the main road and shortly after turn left again into via Vittorio Veneto. You are now cycling on an asphalt road. Stay on this road and head uphill in the direction of Padaro. As you climb, you are surrounded by olive groves, this being an area famous for the production of olive oil. Halfway up on the left, you will see the ancient tree “olif del bottes” which is about 900 years old. Pass through Padaro and continue on the main road to Mandrèa from where you have a wonderful view of the Valle dei Laghi. You come to San Giovanni al Monte: after the first houses you pass a lovely little chapel and straight afterwards, you are at Malga San Giovanni. Continue along the main road as far as Marcarie where you turn left. You cycle along a dirt/cement road until you come to the plain of “prai da Gom”, then continue as far as Gorghi where you turn right. Now you descend through a dense wood. Stay on the main road until you come to cross “croce di Bondiga” where there is a spectacular view over Lake Garda. From here, keep on downhill until you come to Treni. At the end of the dirt road, the asphalt road begins, and you continue on downhill. Pass through the medieval town of  Calvola, then Canale, where it is worth stopping off to visit the historic centre which features in the Club of the "Most beautiful in Italy". When you arrive at Ville Monte and the stop sign, turn left onto the main road and then, before the church, take the first right. You descend on a dirt track with a spectacular view of the Tenno Castle against the backdrop of Lake Garda. Back on the main road you come down to Tenno Castle. Take the bend to the left, then stay on the left. After a flat stretch, turn right and now cycle along a dirt/cobbled road as far and Volta di No. Keep to the right, descend as far as Piazze, and keep on going downhill until you rejoin the junction of via Vittorio Veneto and the main road for Padaro. You are back in Varignano: at this point retrace the route you followed on the outward stretch and you are back at the starting point.
